Dogs' and cats' kidneys and bladders do a lot of work. These organs, along with the liver, skin and lymphatic system have a big job handling toxins and stress. Up until cancer took it's place, kidney disease was the #1 disease in cats and dogs.
It pays to support these amazing organs early on before stress, poor food choices, plastics, pesticides, air and water pollution, vaccinations, medications, flea, tick and mosquito insecticides in collars and spot treatments take their toll.
Diet First
Feeding a species appropriate raw or lightly cooked diet is #1 for keeping all organs and systems functioning at their best. Dogs and cats are designed to eat fresh muscle, organ meats, small bones of their prey, blood, connective tissue etc. Nature designed them perfectly for their outdoor environment and prey base. As more dogs and cats live indoors with us and are no longer hunting, they depend on us to supply the wholesome foods they need.
Dry food puts a huge burden on the kidneys and bladder because its DRY. Cats are designed to get all their moisture from their food, not drink water like people and dogs do. Dogs will drink when eating dry food, which helps, but NO kibble is a healthy choice by itself.
Animals Told Me...
When I started communication with animals 30 years ago, I heard over and over how our companions were weak, had no energy or stamina. They told me the food they were eating was not helping them stay healthy and accomplish their missions with their people. This is what drove me to learn dog and cat nutrition from respected holistic vets, Drs. Jean Hofve, Rob Silver and nutritionist Celest Yarnall, PhD as well as the animals themselves.
Kidney & Bladder Support
1) Fresh, clean water made available in many locations and always mixed into food.
2) Super veggies (no more than 10% of their food). Remember to always buy organic, steam, bake or boil them then chop to the appropriate size for your companion and add to their balanced homemade meals or frozen raw/lightly cooked meals.*
These can also be added to canned and dry food in small amounts. But, they will not "complete" a dry kibble. Yogurt and kefir along with the veggies will provide greater nutritional support. However, haphazardly adding is not as ideal as designing a balanced meal plan. I can help you with that.
* Note: Always check with your holistic vet if your companion has any health challenges that would preclude any of these vegetables.
Red bell peppers, have a low potassium content, unlike many vegetables. Red bell peppers are loaded with powerful antioxidants, vitamins C and A, as well as vitamin B6, folic acid and fiber. Red bell peppers also contain the antioxidant lycopene that protects against certain types of cancers.
Spinach, an excellent source of vitamins A, C, K and folate.
Kale, also a low-potassium food. According to various researches, kale is packed with vitamins A, C, calcium, and other minerals which are important for healthy kidney function.
Cabbage, packed with phytochemicals that help in fighting against free radicals that cause chronic diseases like cancer. Low in potassium and low in cost, it is an affordable addition to a kidney & bladder-friendly diet.
And the fantastic Asparagus, a low-calorie food and an excellent source of fiber, vitamins A, C, E, and K. It can act as a mild diuretic, clearing toxins and excess fluid out of kidneys faster. It's soothing to the tubes in the kidneys and is known to prevent kidney and bladder stones.
There are also excellent herbs and other supplements that support your companion's kidney and bladder health.
