Safe Outdoor Space?

Can you create a lovely outdoor space for your cats and dogs to enjoy this summer? Yes! And it can be inexpensive, easy, and help de-stress everyone as well.
Indoor cats and dogs, especially small ones, will love a "petio" where they can enjoy the great outdoors in complete comfort and safety.
Here's how...
Start by asking if you can modify an existing space in the yard, the porch etc. Planning something where you can relax comfortably as well will be a bonus for your cat and dog. Enjoying the space together is even better! (That will be a nifty selling point for your house as well).
Essentials
1) Safety: Be sure animals can't get in or out. If you're building a catio, it's best to cover it or use proven "cat baffles" on the fence. Cats are very adept at figuring out how to get over fences.
MY story...For about 10 minutes, my cat, Azul studied the top of the just completed homemade fence "baffle." I heard him say, "Right," then he jumped from the ground, hit the wall of the house with all four paws, and launched himself gracefully over the top of the fence. (Who's the smartest person in my house?)
Be sure dogs who love to dig can't dig under the fence.
2) Comfort -- be sure there's shade and water.
Water must be available at all times A water fountain is ideal as it won't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Check out stainless steel models and avoid plastic as it holds bacteria more readily. (See my resources below). A "kiddie" wading pool is super for big dogs who love water but can be a drowning hazard for small dogs. Always supervise dogs around water, especially swimming pools.
Shade throughout the day is essential, especially if there isn't a window or doggie door available for them to get inside. Be sure you know how the sun tracks. You could also include a sun umbrella if there's space.
Litter box or designated "dog relief area" with proper drainage or easy cleanup.
Soft resting places. Consider a raised bed for dogs with washable cotton throw rug. The raised bed allows for air circulation and prevents moisture underneath. For cats, multiple perches or hammocks.
