Science is catching up and "proving" how cats and dogs improve our wellbeing.
This year research scientists in Korea, Austria, and Germany have been testing pairs of animals and their humans, measuring changes in the human being's brain waves, blood pressure, heart health and more. These studies, along with Pet Partners', and other extensive research on the animal-human bond over many years around the world, have shown how interacting with cats, dogs and therapy animals increases our wellbeing and life-effectiveness.
In the Human Animal Bond Reseach Institute's last survey, 76% of pet owners reported that their personal health has improved as a result of having a pet and 87% of pet owners say that they have experienced mental health improvements from pet guardianship.
According to the researchers at Konkuk University in South Korea, walking and playing with a dog increased beta-band oscillations in the brain suggesting a more wakeful, relaxed state. Grooming, massaging, petting dogs increased alpha-band oscillations, heightening concentration without stress.
Petting and grooming cats results in the release of the "happiness hormone," Oxytocin.
Therapy animals in a hospital or waiting area have been shown to significantly impact improvements in patients' mood, pain and other stress measurements.
5. And one of my favorites, a study reported by the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America stated that the frequency of a cat’s purr, somewhere between 25 and 150 Hertz, falls within the same range as vibrational and electrical frequencies used in therapeutic or clinical settings to treat pain, swelling, wounds, and other injuries.
These are samples of how our animals generally help us. However, each individual animal does special healing work with each of their human and animal family members.
