Set Up a Pet Trust?

ree

"Before my aunt died, she set up a trust for Buffy, and we're SO grateful!"

I wish I heard these words more often. Too many beloved dogs, cats, rabbits... are left behind with uncertain futures when their beloved guardian passes. Happily, horse guardians are usually on top of this as caring for a horse is a big time, energy and finacial committment.

Leaving your family to "figure it out" puts them in a difficult positiion and your beloved animal in a very precarious position. Your human family will be grieving as well as having to manage your estate, property, funeral arrangements, etc., etc. Your beloved animal will also be grieving and without focus, purpose and facing "eviction" from their home.

The good news is that you can plan for your companion on the event that they outlive you. Here's a great article from the US Humane Society with some guidance, "Providing for Your Pet's Future", including how to prepare for the unexpected and be sure your companions are not left alone in your house without food or water if there's an accident or you can't get home becasue of a natural disaster.

We all adore our furry family members and need to plan for their care, just in case...
